THE WILD HAT
About
Grandmamá liked her wild hat right from the start–the way it looked, the way it fit–but she wasn’t prepared for it taking on a life of its own!
Grandmamá’s storytelling spins quickly out of control. What really happened, and what she was imagining, were impossible to tell apart. As the kids knew perfectly well, once granny got rolling, it was best to just sit back and listen.
The Wild Hat! combines fantasy, humor, and occasional life lessons–including tips on handling alien invasions–into one unforgettable read. Perfect for parents, grandparents (especially adventurous grandmothers!), teachers, librarians, and Martian children, this funny, rhyming book for kids is more than just laughs; it’s a tool for celebrating the magical realism that adults often see as unusual, but which kids see as everyday life. The bilingual format also makes it a great choice for families or classrooms exploring Spanish and English.
Whether you’re looking to add to your collection of quirky fantasy tales or searching for a meaningful gift, this lyrical, rhyming story delivers a memorable, hilarious, whole-family, read-aloud experience.
Praise for this book
This was such a cute book. Both the story and the illustrations. Great book to read to the littles and you can even expand it into a craft time for everyone to make their own "Wild Hat".
This book was totally bizarre. It's about a grandma who pulls a hat out of the lake while swimming and then talks about wearing it for important occasions like alien invasions. The text was simple and so the translations made sense, but the images were extremely odd. It was like an odd realism cartoon style that I just kept staring at totally bemused. Actually, the plot was pretty bemusing too. But I've given it four stars because it was really unique, I don't think I've ever read anything quite like it before!
This is a short, offbeat, quirky book about a grandmother who hooks a hat while fishing and wards off an alien invasion while wearing it. The book, which contains colorful, funky illustrations, portrays such odd things as: dogs dressed up like humans, a boy riding a bird in a classroom, and a hat that hisses and is capable of producing offspring. The text is presented in both English and Spanish. While the tongue-in-cheek writing style may not be for everyone, there is no denying that this book shows great originality and creativity.

This bilingual picture book is hilarious and perfect for reading aloud. Grandmamá tells wild stories about her magical hat that get more and more ridiculous—aliens, talking animals, the whole deal. The rhymes are catchy and fun, so kids stay hooked. It's in both English and Spanish, which is great for learning, but mostly it's just entertaining. The illustrations are colorful and imaginative. Great gift for young kids or grandparents who love silly bedtime stories.

This is another installment of a series of books called the Uncle Bunkle Stories. It meets expectations as it is as odd and crazy as the others. The storyline rhymes as usual and makes it super easy to follow and enjoy. If you let your mind open, you’ll enjoy this one as much as the others and it will keep your attention the whole way through. Cheers.

Uncle Bunkle has created a one-of-a-kind story that’s as wacky as it is wonderful. From the moment Grandmamá hooks a hat while fishing and somehow ends up fending off aliens, my kids were glued to every page. The rhymes are clever and rhythmic, making it fun to read aloud.
The English and Spanish text side-by-side makes it perfect for introducing young readers to a second language in a fun way.
5.0 out of 5 stars Funny, strange, but appealing

This strange story of grandmother's hat appeals to both children and adults. I found it unexpectedly odd, but at the same time intriguing in a curious and satisfying way. The children laughed, and I was curious to see what other activities would unfold around this fishy fished-out hat.

"The Wild Hat" is such a fun and imaginative book that made me smile from the very first page. I really loved how Grandmamá’s stories grow more and more wild, especially the part with the alien invasion—it was silly in the best way. The playful rhymes make it easy to read aloud, and they kept my attention throughout. Another part I enjoyed was how the story gently mixes imagination with small life lessons without feeling serious or heavy. The bilingual English-Spanish format is a wonderful bonus and makes the book feel even more special. Overall, this book feels joyful, creative, and perfect for sharing laughs with kids and grandparents together.
A Book that can take you away from reality, but bring you back ready to do it again!
March 8, 2026A fun book that is whimsical and funny. I was not familiar with the Uncle Buncle books. The pictures in the book remind me of art in the style of Monet. The storyline is off base and yet relatable because of this... It is definitely a book to open up creative thoughts and silly imaginative creatures, or objectifying a inanimate object. Also there is a pride in the description of the grandmother character and an acceptance of whatever she is involved in, well that's how Grandma rolls! I think I was surprised even after reviewing what the book was about, then opening to read I was, "Wowed!"

SO FREAKIN' GOOD
March 7, 2026SO FREAKIN' GOOD! This is a whimsical, smart, and original little story about a zany gramma that likes to fish and finds a special hat. The Kindle edition has vivid and delightful illustrations that are just as delightfully weird as the main character. This is part of the Uncle Bunkle stories which I am new to. I will immediately be checking out others in the series. Each page has both English and Spanish text so the story is truly bilingual. As an eccentric fishing gramma myself I was instantly charmed by this book. My grands were tickled too! Would recommend for read aloud time or even campfire story. Very creative and fun.
Really fun and crazy
March 7, 2026Really fun and crazy rhyming book for the whole family. This book is great - English and Spanish for twice the fun!

A silly, splashy adventure that's fun to read out loud!
March 13, 2026When I started reading "The Wild Hat," it felt like I was jumping straight into a goofy adventure that doesn't take itself too seriously - and that is what makes it so much fun! The bright and colorful illustrations, along with the playful rhymes, pulled me in. This is one of those books that you want to read out loud because the rhythm and the silliness just make it more entertaining that way. What I really enjoyed was how imaginative the story is. The idea of a wild hat getting into the strange situations that keep popping up on the journey is hilarious. What makes this book stand out is the fact that it is written in both English and Spanish. Just that reason alone makes it more accessible to more readers, especially for those families that enjoy bilingual books. Overall, this book was made for sharing - whether you are a grandparent reading to a child or a parent doing silly voices during story time. It's lighthearted and just a little ridiculous in the best possible way. If you're looking for a playful read-aloud story that doesn't mind being a little wild, this one definitely delivers.
Now THAT'S Fun!
March 15, 2026With clever rhymes and crazy-cool art, this story of a Wild Hat is going to be read until the words slide off the page! This is the Grandmama I aspire to be! The grandsons can tell when I read it to them: Aliens conquered and hittens rehomed. Yes, I said hittens. Read it and share with the kids. They'll pester you to read it every day 😁
entertaining book for my family, for my kids

THE WILD HAT is different. There is no way to suggest otherwise. But in this instance, different is what made it a special request from my kids. That’s right. My kids read another Uncle Bunkle book and saw there were others. We waited a few days, but they kept asking for another silly book. The illustrations or images were well done. This is especially true because these books have so many visuals to entertain my kids. They are different style of art than what you may typically find in a children’s story, but not inappropriate or problematic, just different and unique and make them an easy choice for my kids. Plus the story is presented in English and Spanish and this gives it a little extra something that made my alright with buying another fun book. I have a feeling my kids will be asking for another book sooner than later.
Great book for a classroom library
March 24, 2026This is an adorable book! I can see a teacher using this as a “brain break” and having the children move, make sounds or act out parts as the book is read out loud to them. I especially like the Spanish translations at the bottom of the page. What a great way to immerse the reader as a way to learn a different language
