Uncle Bunkle, the character
Uncle Bunkle is well-intentioned, but befuddled. He’s a town crier of unlikely scenarios, a harbinger of doom. Fortunately, his imagined catastrophes come with recommended solutions. Unfortunately, they don’t always make sense! Kids often have to step in and save the day.
Uncle Bunkle, the author/illustrator
In a parallel universe, Oregon-based Uncle Bunkle (a.k.a. Tod Schneider) has spent decades working in social services and crime prevention, writing and consulting on school safety nationwide, and securing grants for worthy causes. Alas, none of those projects has been especially funny!
On the other hand, his ridiculous, rhyming, read-aloud, children’s stories make people laugh. They present imagined perils and outlandish solutions, accompanied by quirky illustrations and English/Spanish translation. His participatory storytelling game, developed over ten years as a visiting classroom storyteller, takes the fun up a notch, inviting enthusiastic students to help with the tall-tale telling.
Uncle Bunkle’s art wraps composite photography, digital filters, and conventional graphics into a magical realism fever-dream. Major influences on his storytelling include Walter Mitty, Hilaire Belloc, Edward Gorey, and the Cat in the Hat.
